SCARY KIND

2015-12-28 09.32.41.jpgSCARY KIND

Some cops in America are cowards, they will pull their hand gun for no

reason.

mE, 1969 on my way to Vietnam.
On a warm sunny beach in La

with friends, i was 19 at the time, 18 months out of Navy Boot Camp.

Horse play with some cute females and my friends on the beach.

I have a small blanket rapped around my
shoulders, i’m walking back to

where
the girls were with one of my male friends.

Two cops walk up, one pulls his hand gun, then points
it at my

chest three feet away.
I release the blanket, it falls to the sand,
No fear

in my eyes, none, the cop knows i’m not afraid of his gun.

You see he wants me to be afraid, fearful, scare, and when i’m not,

he wants to know who I am and where i come from.

I new all this in the blink on an eye!

mE: “What’s up?”

cop: “That’s the way Clint Eastwood carried his gun in the movie.”

mE: “I’m not Clint Eastwood and this is definitely not the movies.”

cop: “Show me some ID.”

I never even looked at the other cop, i wouldn’t
give him

any power over me.

SIDE BAR, i’m thinking really nigga (niggas come in all colors),
they

hope we don’t have ID.

mE: “Yes Officer, it’s other there, I point about 30
feet from where we’re

standing.
They have me and my friend show our ID’s.

I show my Military ID and my my friend, i don’t know what

he had, but he had ID.

The cops leave, trying to act like they’re not dis-

appointed, two sorry motherfuckers, La cops.

What’s fu@k up is, i like cops, if someone breaks in who you going to call?

Then it’s the cop that murders a 12 yr old 5 7′ 195 Lb little

bLACK child, if your ass is the scary kind, you Sir, don’t need

neither a fu@king gun nor badge. pEACE ☮

DEVIL YOU KNOW

giujBoats8DEVIL YOU KNOW

Jeep Driver, Petty Officer Third Class Brown, “Seamen you ok back there?”

Semen Green, “Yeah, i’m good, how long to Phu Cuong Fire Base?”

Brown, “About 35 miles out, so a hour.”

I’m in the back of the Jeep, it’s just me and the Brown.

The reason i’m in the back is if we’re attacked i can return fire better

in the back seat with my m-16, Señor, hacer usted comprende.

i’m sitting behind the driver at times, in the middle and on the far

side, it depends on what we come across headed down the road.

I’m looking out the window day dreaming, thought, i’m going to

be a writer some day, weird right.

Green, “I’m going to be a writer some day.”

Brown, “What?“

Green, “This is one long ass day, how long have you been driving the Jeep?”

Brown, “Five months, nobody to fuck with me out here, but the gooks.”

Green, “Viet Cong, V.C., Victor Charles ‘Charlie’, “mother fucking Viet Cong.”

‘Crack,’ ‘crack,’ ‘crack’ sound from the drivers side.

i look out the window, there’s this field of palm trees, about 50 yards from the road, ten rows deep ten

rows across, each tree about fifteen feet apart, I see gun smoke coming

from one of the trees.

Brown, “That’s “Henry”, he does’t this shit every time we pass this

fucking row of trees.”

Green, “This mother fucker don’t know me, fuck him, i ain’t did a fucking

thing to him, that’s just fucked up.”

Brown, “Kid, your funny, he don’t know me, now that’s some funny shit.”

“Where you from?”

Green, “Ogden, Utah, home of the Ben Lomond Scots, and the Weber State

Wildcat.”

Brown, “Your the first Black Scot I’ve ever seen, Damn we’re neighors,

i’m from Laramie, Wyoming.”

Green “I know that the capital is Cheyenne, and that one college team that

has those brown uniforms.”

Brown, “That me, The University of Wyoming, Cowboys in Laramie.”

My dad’s been the Local Sheriff for the last fourteen years.”

Green, “That’s nice.”

Green, “Those girls that would come down to Utah, with the

Cowboys, man they had some fat asses.”

We’re 10 miles from Phu Cuong.

We sit in silence, i go in my seabag and pull out my portable cassette player, and start to

play a tape of songs i had recorded. Brown likes the music so

we’re cool for the rest of the way to the base camp listening to the music.

Cookie and The 21

Cat Lo Naval Base Vietnam 1969

The first time I hear The Jackson Five I  was TDY 90 days for the second

time on the USS Benewah (APB-35).The song was ABC by the Jackson Five,

one of the crew had a cassette player. We were in Cambodia, I know we

wasn’t supposed to be there, Nixon had us there anyway, my bad no one

USS Benewah (APB-35) – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I got a story

Cookie and The 21 ( a ship I new as the 21)

Cookie (a Navy cook, hell of a nice guy, trying to remember his name)

made the best brownies, they were special brownies, and like Forest would

say “that’s all I have to say about that.” in Vietnam.

The 21 was a ship  that was down river from us some distance, I never saw

her, or it could have been a him. Crew members would travel to the 21 so

they could  drink hard liquor. One weekend a hand full of crew members

were going to make the trip to the 21.

“Green we’re going to the 21 you want to come?”IMG_2248.JPGUSS Suribachi (AE-21) was a Suribachi-class ammunition ship of the United States Navy.

What were the odds, six months in country, time for R&R, I travel from Cat Lo to Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon, I wouldn’t cut my AFRO, come on who in thee FUCK was going to cut my hair! Fuckkkk MACV, I did that silly motherfacka a favor when I said “Fuck MACV” grab my sea bag and “Lisa” my M16 then skedaddle the hell out of there. I think, fuck it I’ll see what’s Saigon’s like in the fall, wait a minute all they have is hot and rain. Ok let me get back to my fish story, so I’m walking down a street in the city of Saigon, then from a distance I see my best friend Lorenzo Wright, we where team mates on the Naval basketball team in San Diego NTC in 1968. By the time we reach one another we were running, you know we both had to man up real quick, we hugged fast as hell then we started the “DAP.” WHAT THE FUCK IS A DAP?, I’m glade you asked. Historically, the dap is both a symbol among African American men that expresses unity, strength, defiance, or resistance and a complex language for communicating information. The dap and the black power handshake, which evolved from the dap, were important symbols of black consciousness, identity, and cultural unity throughout black America.

We then go check out Soul Alley, a part of Saigon that the “Blood’s”(bLACK’S) would hang in. PEACE!

Cat Lo Navy Base was nice. Mama-San would say some of the GI’s were

number ten “him number ten, him bad, you number one, you number one

GI, Soul Brother number one, Number one Gi.” Most of the Vietnamese

people were friendly. There was a small roll of shops a little ways

down the road I guess the first one was 50 yards away from the

front gate. These shops were closely group together, I’m thinking

maybe five different shops, small structures, I only remember one

because I ate there, hey some noodles with some kind of meat, we

were told not to eat their food, but I was not going to listen to

that bullshit. Why? Because I would see this petty 16 year old

black-African and Vietnamese girl in the area of one of these

shops. I never talk to her, I wanted to send her a message, I’ll

eat your food, I trust, I respect, I care. Hey I figured if they

loved her they were cool with me. I would look at her, but never

stare, to me she was a baby-san. I gave her two nick names “it em

gai” (little sister) and “dep hoa” (beautiful flower) not to

long after I got to Cat Lo I volunteered to go out to the boonies,

I went TDY (90 day) to Phu Coung by “it em gai”. I was concern for

my heath, you know, getting body parts blown off, the worst fucking

thing, fucking getting capture, fuck that, no fucking way! What was

weird i wasn’t afraid of death, I just didn’t give a fuck! PEACE!
